Landscape Heritage Research

It is the aim of LHSA to originate, generate and create research on the Landscape Heritage of Southern Africa and, ultimately, all of Africa. This will fall into the the broad categories already outlined: Natural, Cultural and, shall we say, Desirable?
So far, the primary thrust of LHSA is its monumental work The Landscape Map and its companion Landscapedia. This digital map-encyclopedia compendium has been conceived around the three broad types of landscape as outlined above and further detailed below.

The Natural Landscape

Much has already been written on the Natural Landscape of South and Southern Africa, if not all of Africa. This is the domain of the geographies, life sciences and tourism. How to pull together these diverse sources into a comprehensive natural landscape study in the context of Landscape will be the challenge.

The Cultural Landscape

This field is probably less comprehensively studied than the Natural Landscape and it is harder to define as well. The Cultural Landscape is subject to constant growth and change, historical and political period, language developments and human migration. Seen from a Landscape perspective, how this will be achieved is no small or simple task.

The Desirable Landscape

The Designed Landscape or the Desirable Landscape as we have dubbed it, is the world of desire and design, the world the way we wish and want it to be, without necessarily achieving it. This is the Landscape of the Landscape Architect, the Landscape Designer, the Garden Designer, the home owner, the developer, the engineer, the architect, the municipality, the province and the state. Traditional landscape design has been performed by all and sundry, amateur and enthusiast, horticulturist and botanist, and lately Landscape Architects. Recording this work will be an ongoing task and a historical journey.
